Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
